Biobank ibdw: Certification according to ISO 9001:2015

ISO Certification 9001:2015

The quality management of the Interdisciplinary Bank of Biomaterials and Data Würzburg (ibdw) complies with the requirements of the DIN EN ISO 9001:2015.

The certification process analyzed the implementation of the quality policy, the documentation of the processes within the ibdw as well as measures that ensure permanent and continuous improvement.

The ibdw is the only biobank in Germany that is certified according to the ISO 9001:2015 standard.

The ISO standard DIN EN ISO 9001 is a benchmark for quality management systems. The certification is valid for three years.

ibdw at Europe Biobank Week

As part of the »Europe Week biobank« of ESBB and BBMRI ERIC (13-09.16.2016) in Vienna, the ibdw presented lectures and posters on the issues of sample quality and public relations.

»Girls’ Day und Boys’ Day« 2016 at the ibdw

Girls and Boys Day 2016 at biobank ibdw

Taking part in the events of the career information day for girls and boys the ibdw opened its doors to present its building and work to the visitors.

The aim of the event was to inform future employees of the UKW about the subject »biobanking«. Our visitors gained insight into the cooperation between the various institutions of the UKW and learned about the variety of occupational fields at our biobank and the UKW.

»What are the tasks of a biobank?« The quiz taking place  in the intranet of the ukw revolved around the work of the biobank ibdw and found great feedback. More than 600 participants took part in our quiz.

In December our winners were drawn. An iPad Mini goes to Mrs A. Krönert, a coupon of the Restaurant Steinburg was awarded to Mrs. K. Kraus and Mrs S. Christner won a present voucher.

Poster prize awarded to ibdw

  • Joerg Fuchs (ibdw) was awarded with a poster prize for his illustration of an integrated information strategy for Biobanks

»How to convey working methods and benefits of biobanks?« This pivotal question of public relations involves an examination of target groups and their specific demands. Patients and donors usually have other need for information as researchers or medical staff.

For his illustration of an integrated information concept for patients, medical staff and researchers Jörg Fuchs (ibdw) was awarded with a poster prize at the
4th National Biobank Symposium.


School meets Science

A school class of the Riemenschneider Gymnasium visits the ibdw

»Data privacy and security« are important issues in our age of permanent interconnection and social media. The question of handling personal data in the field of medical research and treatment is in the focus of public interest as well.

While visiting the ibdw pupils of the Riemenschneider high school in Würzburg learned  about operation and societal benefits of a biobank. They discussed  the issues of collection, use and processing of data in the context of medical research and the role of biobanks for the future of medicine with the ibdw staff.

BioKEP – at the 99th annual meeting of the DGP

The ibdw-cooperation- and evaluation project ›BioKEP was presented at the 99th Annual Meeting of the German Society of Pathology in May 2015. The focus of the presentation was on the requirements that apply to such co-operation projects.

ibdw and data security - a main topic at the open day of CHFC

The ibdw was present with a stand at the Open Day of the Comprehensive Heart Failure Center (CHFC) on the 9th of May 2015.

The main topic was focused on aspects of data security. This topic was discussed at length by many visitors at the stand of ibdw.

The employees of the ibdw were supported by a group of students of the secondary school Riemenschneider-Gymnasium Würzburg. They contributed a poster about the ibdw as a part of a school project.

ibdw wins poster award!

This year poster prizes were awarded for the first time at the annual "National Symposium on Biobanking" in Berlin. The ibdw succeeded with a poster titled "Semi-automated collection and processing of human biomaterials". The poster was awarded the first prize in the category "IT support and interoperability". On the poster the automated workflow for the processing of biospecimen as implemented at the ibdw was described in detail.

In November 2014 colleagues from the Hanover Unified Biobank (HUB) visited the ibdw to obtain information about the progress of biobanking at the University Hospital of Wuerzburg.

The program included lectures and guided tours of the facilities of the biobank.

Biobank officially opened

  • Eröffnungsfeier

On June 21, 2013 the Interdisciplinary Bank of Biomaterials and Data Würzburg (ibdw) was officially opened.

The President of the University of Würzburg, Prof. Dr. Alfred Forchel and the Dean of the Medical Faculty, Prof. Dr. Matthias Frosch welcomed the guests.

The opening address was given by the Parliamentary Secretary of State in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Dr. Helge Braun.

Further on the Bavarian State Minister for Science, Research and the Arts, Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch gave his message of greeting to the audience.

Prof. Dr. Erwin Böttinger, director of the Charles R. Bronfman Insitute for Human Sized MEDICINE, Mount Sinai School of Medicine New York held the inaugural address and was talking about new perspectives towards personalized medicine.

Prof. Dr. Christoph Reiners, Medical Director of the University Hospital Wuerzburg outlined the efforts that were taken by the joint engagement of the University Hospital and the University to make biobanking possible in Würzburg.

Prof. Dr. Roland Jahns, director of the Interdisciplinary Bank of Biomaterials and Data Würzburg thanked the authorities, all supporters, and his team for their help to establish one of the five National Biobanks at the University Hospital.

Peter Mack, director of the public construction authority symbolically handed over the ibdw key to Prof. Dr. Roland Jahns.
